Judge Vicente Bermudez Zacarias was fatally shot in front of his home on Monday. Judge Zacarias, 37, is best known for his involvement with the “El Chapo” case, though he has presided over many cases specifically involving drug and cartel related incidents. Judge Zacarias was shot at close range in the head before being rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto has ordered an investigation into the murder, as stated in a speech he gave on Monday. The motive behind the murder is still unclear, though there is CCTV footage of Judge Zacarias murder.
Judge Zacarias presided over multiple high-profile cases, including an appeal to prevent the extradition of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. If extradited, Guzman could face charges including drug trafficking, and murder. “El Chapo” has escaped from Mexican prisons twice in the past, hiding from law enforcement for over a decade, from 2001 to 2014, after his last escape. His most recent escape was last year, though he has been recaptured since. He will most likely be extradited to the United States by 2017, despite his appeals.
