Emma Watson delivered a powerful speech at the 71st annual United Nations General Assembly yesterday as a special event for her HeforShe campaign. Although her claim to international fame is the Harry Potter series the 26 year old actress has been an ardent supporter of women’s rights and gender equality for years and has been the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador since 2014. In her speech she refused to skirt around controversial issues, making bold claims such as: “No country in the world can yet say they have achieved gender equality.” She also spoke of the importance of the cause of feminism and how no one should be afraid of a word that promotes fairness and equality. The biggest point of her HeforShe campaign is to get males involved in the fight for women’s rights. The struggle for gender equality is not “just a women’s issue, its a human rights issue” according to her campaign’s mission statement, and it will take our whole society’s cooperation to combat it.
