Around 9:30 this morning (September 17) the Marine Semper Fi 5k race to benefit the MARSOC Foundation was just about to get underway in Seaside Park, New Jersey, a pipe bomb exploded in a trash can along the race route. Officials promptly canceled the race that had been scheduled to begin at 9am, but was running late due to last minute sign-ups. Around 5,000 people were scheduled to compete. An investigation into the potential for more bombs is currently in progress with at least one more suspicious package being identified. No one was hurt or injured in the explosion although the area is still under lockdown with an evacuation zone in place for neighboring houses. The proceeds from the race were to benefit MARSOC personnel and their families as well as those of Marines and Sailors who made the ultimate sacrifice. With intense investigations still being conducted there are currently no suspects.
