Florida Democrats this afternoon announced new legislation expanding women’s right to choose what they do with their bodies and reaffirming their general right to privacy. Senate Democratic Leader Arthenia Joyner and House Democratic Leader Lori Berman worked together to get out bills SB 116 and HB 947, looking to the monumental Roe v. Wade case, as today marks its 43rd anniversary.
The legislation’s main focus is to create a program funding Long Acting Reversible Contraceptives, or LARCs, which are shown to be highly effective in stopping unwanted births. Once inserted, they last several years, eliminating the possibility of accidental pregnancy by forgetting to take birth control pills. The legislation aims to offer these modes of contraception at a low cost, especially to teens and low income women.
Legislators cited a similar program started in Colorado a few years back, which was shown to reduce teen birth rates by 40% and saved taxpayers $42.5 million in healthcare costs.
