When one describes the characteristics of a quality college town, a thriving music scene tends to be pretty high on the list. Universities are known to be breeding grounds for new artists. Students just like us decided to put down their textbooks and pick up their instruments, forming bands like Queen, Pink Floyd and MGMT.
If you are like me, you might have wondered at some point: “Where does this dazzling, underground music scene exist at Florida State?” I assumed it was non-existent, but eventually I stumbled upon some of Tallahassee’s coolest musical outlets. Here are a few places that might become your favorite spots for Friday night:
The most well known spot to jam on FSU’s campus is Club Downunder in the Union, next to the Chili’s. Most people have heard of this place, but not as many have delved into the productions these students put on. Club Downunder has hosted bands like Matt and Kim, Of Montreal, and Sylvan Esso. If you’re partial to a relaxed environment, check out open mic night, where you can decide to support your fellow Noles, or heckle them off stage (just kidding, don’t do that). Anyone can sign up to perform, whether your gig is musical, comedic, or some other talent you want your fellow students to see.
The atmosphere in Club Downunder is very similar to that of an underground music hub. With dimmed lights, a second story overlooking the stage, and a bar, Club Downunder is a place not to be overlooked. Upcoming events include Dale Earnheart Jr. Jr., Vacationer, and FIDLAR.
Cow Haus Productions
Cow Haus Productions has been a top-tier promoter of live music since 1996. While not a venue itself, Cow Haus promotes a wide variety of music genres across the greater Tallahassee area. Their most notable and frequently promoted venue is Pug’s Live. This down-home bar and nightclub thrives off supplying Tallahassee locals with music and talent that grooves, rocks, makes you laugh, and everything in between. You can learn more about Cow Haus at facebook.com/cowhauspresents, where they are currently showcasing their September-October lineup, boasting over 30 events in just over two months!
Bradfordville Blues Club
The BBC is as authentic a venue as a blues lover could dream of. This is the type of place that will throw you back into the 60’s, the kind of spot you would imagine the greats jamming in. To bring you back to the golden days, the tabletops and walls are covered in autographed portraits of blues icons, and a vast selection of beer and wine is provided. In between sets, artists sit around a campfire and converse with their fans underneath the surrounding oaks and the night sky. Where is this magical place? According to the website it’s easy: after the GPS won’t take you any farther, “follow the tiki torches down the dirt roads till you reach the juke joint under the stars.”
Whatever your tastes may be, Tallahassee can satisfy your cravings for quality live music. This list is nowhere near exhaustive, rather it provides a few examples of the diverse music scene our city has to offer. It’s up to you to go out and find your musical niche.
